Abstract: Historically there has been inherent tension between theory and application in the STEM sciences. This tension affects organizational units at our universities and how new knowledge is generated. We will discuss a brief history of how statistics and mathematics has been organized at University of Florida and how institutional barriers can be broken down to more effectively advance medical research.
