Title: Topological data analysis and its applications to biological data
Abstract: Topological data analysis (TDA) is a powerful tool for studying the shape of data with a complex topological structure. I will present the results of two projects applying TDA to different biological data. First, we use TDA to analyze videos of C. elegans worms. We were able to produce a quantitative summary of worms’ locomotion and create synthetic videos of their stereotypical behaviors. Second, we apply TDA to microscopy images of pluripotent stem cells. We managed to quantify changes in the cell pattern formations of stem cell colonies during their differentiation process.
