Student Research Symposium

Our students are the future leaders of research!

matt and julian symposium 2025

Every spring, the Laboratory for Systems Medicine (LSM) holds the Student Research Symposium, showcasing research by mentees. The event welcomes middle and high school students from Alachua, Orange, and surrounding counties.

The symposium is held with the Department of Mathematics and the Orlando Math Circle (OMC) as part of the annual Future Leaders Advancing in Math and Medicine Experience (FLAMME). LSM is located within the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine.

Over 100 middle and high school students and prospective Gator researchers attend the annual event to learn about researching with LSM investigators and mentors, hear about the journeys of university students and faculty, and ask their burning questions.

The Department of Mathematics takes the students for a tour of the UF campus, provides fun activities where the students interact with university students and faculty, and joins them for lunch.

Middle and high school students are then invited to join the LSM Student Research Symposium for an immersive experience with undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and faculty from a wide range of backgrounds. They will learn how mathematics and medicine come together and have opportunities to make connections with potential future mentors.
